Admissions Director
Oversees department and designs, implements, assesses, and recommends revisions to all facets of the admissions process.

Ambulatory Services Director
Oversees ambulatory outpatient services including day surgery. Usually this director is the nurse in charge.

Anesthesiology Chief
Oversees all anesthesiologists in a hospital unit. Performs scheduling and ­purchasing; oversees procedures and problems.

Biomedical Engineer
Involved in designing, developing, modifying, and testing medical devices. Advises users regarding the proper and safe application of medical technology.

Blood Bank Director
Supervises all operations of the blood bank. Blood banks draw, process, store, and deliver blood to hospital departments.

Burn Care Unit Director
Responsible for all aspects of care provided to patients in the burn unit.

Business Office Director
Oversees hospital billing, account management, and customer service.

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Director
Oversees the cardiac catheterization laboratory staff and procedures carried out at the hospital.

Cardiology Director
Responsible for the cardiology department, which includes all ­cardiologists in a hospital.

Case Management Director
Affiliated with or part of the social services department. Provides patient case assessment, treatment planning, referral, and follow-up.

Central Supply Services Director
Oversees the maintenance and distribution of supplies and equipment to all hospital departments. Central ­supply can also provide internal control to monitor governmental restrictions, laws, and infection control standards regulating medical facilities.

Central/Sterile Services Director
Responsible for the department that provides sterile medical and surgical instruments and supplies. The pharmacy is not part of this department.

Chemical/Substance Abuse Director
Oversees chemical and substance abuse programs in the hospital.

Chief Administrator
Primary executive in charge of the hospital’s operations. The chief administrator’s actual title may be CEO, President, Vice President, etc. There is significant but not complete duplication with the Chief Executive Officer job function.

Chief Executive Officer
Appointed by the governing body to direct the overall management of the hospital. This list includes only those administrators with the title of CEO. There is significant duplication with the Chief Administrator; for complete coverage, choose both titles.

Chief Financial Officer
Oversees all aspects of the institution’s finances from budgeting to payroll.

Chief Information Officer
Responsible for technology purchasing. Manages the information systems in a hospital. There is some duplication with Information System/MIS Director.

Chief Operations Officer
Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the hospital. Usually oversees volunteer/support services. Also known as executive director.

Clinical Coordinator of Emergency Room
Oversees all aspects of the hospital emergency room. See also Physician Director/Emergency Room.

Continuing Education Director
Responsible for evaluation, development, and implementation of continuing education programs for health professionals.

Discharge Planning Director
Sets up discharge of patients, schedules visits if needed, and gives patients prescriptions.

DRG Coding Director
Responsible for duties related to the prospective payments system (PPS), including early determination of the patient’s Diagnosis Related Group (DRG); informing the attending physician of the normal length of stay, and providing additional information from the case mix index management information system.

Facility/Plant Manager
Responsible for the physical plant of the hospital and its functionality. The manager oversees maintenance, janitorial services, repair, installation of equipment, troubleshooting, etc.

Family Practice Director
Coordinates the involvement of family practice within the hospital. Family practice specializes in providing, supervising, and coordinating the continuing general medical care of patients of all ages, primarily in family groups.

Food Services Director
Oversees the food service department staff, as well as the ­planning, purchasing, and preparation of food services in a hospital.

Formulary Committee Chair
Oversees the list of prescription drugs that various health plans have approved for use by prescribing physicians. Each health plan has its own formulary. See also Pharmacy Director.

Manages the department focused on the structure, function, diseases, and pathology of the stomach and intestines.

Geriatric Services Director
Coordinates efforts pertaining to treatment of diseases that primarily affect the elderly.

HIPAA Compliance Director
Oversees compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which defines the rights and responsibilities that patients, healthcare providers and health plans have in the protection, use, and disclosure of health information.

Home Healthcare Services
Director Manages the department of the hospital that provides medical and other health services in the patient’s home.

Hospitalist
Doctors whose primary focus is the general medical care of hospital patients. Their responsibilities include patient care, research, and leadership related to hospital care. Coordinates with patient’s primary care/referring physician.

Housekeeping Director
Supervises housekeeping staff, procedures, scheduling, and purchasing of housekeeping and janitorial services and supplies.

Human Resources Director
Responsible for all personnel functions including hiring, benefits, training, equal opportunity issues, etc.

Infection Control Director
Manages the hospital’s program of infection control including sanitizing, ­cleaning, disinfecting, decontaminating, and sterilizing medical products and devices that are essential to safe patient care and staff welfare. Some duplication with Infectious Disease Director.

In-Service Education Director
Organizes classes and training sessions for internal staff members of the hospital. Some duplication with Patient Education Director.

Intensive Care/Critical Care Director
Oversees all aspects of the ICU/CCU, including budgeting and employees.

Internal Medicine Chief
Oversees the internal medicine department. This branch of medicine deals with diagnosis and medical (non-surgical) therapy of disorders and diseases of the internal structures of the body.

Responsible for all laboratory procedures, personnel, and supplies.

Managed Care Services Director
Negotiates with HMOs, PPOs, and other insurance contracts for the ­hospital and patients.

Management Services Director
Coordinates the interactions between managed care plans and hospital policy and procedure.

Marketing Director
Supervises the marketing and public relations efforts of the hospital. These can include advertising, educational outreach, ­internal communications, etc.

Materials Management Director
Handles the acquisition of supplies for a hospital. Some duplication with Purchasing Director.

Medical Director
Oversees and handles problems for each independent unit that has its own medical director (such as skilled nursing, ICU, etc.).

Medical Library Director
Oversees the medical library in a hospital.

Medical Records Director
Responsible for processing patient records, and making sure forms are ­completed and signed by the nurse and the doctor.

Medical Staff Chief
Oversees the entire ­medical staff. This position is always held by a physician.

Neonatal Care Director
Oversees care of newborn babies.

Neurosurgery Chief
Oversees the neurosurgery department. Responsible for surgery on the brain and spinal cord.

Nuclear Medicine
Director Deals with the use of radioactive materials in diagnosing and treating disease. Some duplication with Radiology Director and Radiology/Diagnostic Imaging Director.

Nursing Director
Oversees the entire nursing staff, serving as an administrative liaison between the staff and other hospital departments, physicians, administration, etc. See also Patient Services Director.

OB/GYN Chief
Oversees the obstetric unit in a hospital. These units offer a wide range of services for women’s health matters, including expectant mothers. Some duplication with OB/GYN Surgery Director.

OB/GYN Surgery Director
A hospital surgery OB/GYN director supervises OB/GYN surgery and ­personnel. Some duplication with Chief of OB/GYN.

Occupational Therapy Director
Oversees all aspects of occupational therapy including patient services. Some duplication with Physical Therapy Director.

Oncology Services Director
Coordinates medical care as it relates to oncology program development and planning, quality, financial performance, and research.

Operating Room Director
Oversees all aspects of personnel, scheduling, supplies, and set-up of the operating room. Some duplication with Chief of Surgery.

Orthopedic Surgery Chief
Oversees the division of the hospital pertaining to orthopedic surgery. Orthopedic surgery relates to the bones, joints and the musculoskeletal system (spine, extremities, and related structures).

P & T Committee Chair
Oversees the pharmacy and therapeutics committee. Generally, is also responsible for reviewing quality and appropriateness of drug use for the pharmacy.

Pastoral Care Director
Coordinates pastoral care services in a hospital. Typically provides 24-hour on-call services for patients, relatives, and the healthcare team.

Patient Education Director
Provides information and education to patients through written goals and objectives concerning medical procedures and self-care. Some duplication with In-Service Education Director and Nursing Director.

Patient Financial Services Director
Handles all patient billing questions and concerns, requests for itemized bills, and account balance inquires.

Patient Services Director
Oversees nurses and all aspects of patient care and services. See also Nursing Director.

Pediatrics
Chief In charge of pediatric services and personnel, including ­doctors, nurses, etc.

Perfusionist
Operates the heart and lung machine.

Pharmacy Director
Purchases supplies and the medicine for the hospital. See also Formulary Committee Chairman.

Physical Rehabilitation Services Director
Responsible for overseeing physical therapy programs that help patients attain or retain their maximum functional capacity. Some duplication with Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy Director.

Physical Therapy Director
Manages all aspects of the hospital’s physical therapy program including rehabilitation, patient services, etc. Some duplication with Occupational Therapy Director and Physical Rehabilitation Services Director.

Physician Director of Emergency Room
Doctor in charge of the hospital emergency department. See also Clinical Coordinator of Hospital Emergency Room.

Physician Recruiter
Recruits physicians for the hospital.

Picture Archiving & Communication Systems (PACS) Administrator
Manages the database, implement efficient workflow and interfaces with other health information system databases as part of the patient’s Electronic Health Record.

Psychiatric Services Director
Oversees the hospital department that provides evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.

Purchasing Director
In charge of all purchases made for/by the hospital. Some duplication with Materials Management Director.

Quality Assurance Director
Manages quality issues of the ­hospital. Investigates complaints, ensures that hospital services are of high quality, makes sure money is spent properly, etc. Some duplication with Risk Management Director.

Oversees procedures of the radiology department like X-rays and EKGs. Usually a physician. Some duplication with Nuclear Medicine Director, Radiology/Diagnostic Imaging Director, and Radiology Director.

Radiology Director
Oversees procedures of radiology including X-rays and EKGs. Some duplication with Nuclear Medicine Director, Chief of Radiology, and Radiology/Diagnostic Imaging Director.

Radiology/Diagnostic Imaging Director
Radiology technician overseeing X-rays, EKGs, ultrasound, and radiology procedures. Some duplication with Nuclear Medicine Director, Radiology Director, and Chief of Radiology.

Respiratory Therapy
Director In charge of all respiratory ­therapists in the hospital.

Risk Management Director
Ensures that hospital services are of the highest quality and helps in maintaining ­positive ­relationships between hospital and patients. Some duplication with Quality Assurance Director.

Oversees all aspects of safety for patients, ­employees, etc.

Security
Director In charge of all security in and for the hospital.

Sleep Lab Director
Oversees the sleep lab that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders.

Social Services Director
Provides assistance with the psychological, social, environmental, and financial difficulties that may arise during a patient’s hospitalization.

Staff Development Director
Oversees educational programs for physicians and staff. These programs can include quality improvement classes, seminars, etc.

Surgery Chief
The physician who oversees surgical units and their budgets. All surgical managers report to this position. Some duplication with Operating Room Director.

Surgery Services Director
The administrator who oversees all surgery units. Some duplication with Chief of Surgery and Operating Room Director.
